Structural vs Practical Identifiability in System Biology

The relevance of model identifiability in system biology is well known. The aim of this paper is to discuss and possibly clarify the role and differences of two different methodologies of testing identifiability of models described by differential equations. One is called structural identifiability and does not require to use data collected in the experiment which, instead, data-based approaches do. The two methods are compared and evaluated in the identifiability analysis of a much quoted biological model, the core model of erythropoietin (Epo) and Epo receptor (EpoR) interaction.
